Tourism


We have not been pushing through crowds of tourists here, although we're far from the only foreign visitors - lots of Germans and French, Japanese and Chinese, very few other Americans.

And today was the first time we saw typical tourist offerings -- souvenir stands, camel rides, write your name in cuneiform. Part of me cringes, and yet part of me wishes that a country with so many unforgettable sights could reap more of the benefits that tourist money brings.

Especially since they're clever enough to sell sun hats and sunglasses along with the kitsch. The lovely Golnaz is modeling one of the hats above.
