This afternoon's expedition was a long zodiac ride around the islets off Floreana to look at wildlife. The minute we found the penguins -- the second piece of unexpected good luck today -- I forgot all about my embarrassment. So what if I'm a dork who can't even climb into a boat? Penguins!
These were the birds I had most wanted to see, and we found three of them, an adult pair and a juvenile, lounging on rocky ledges outside the lava tubes where they nest. Galapagos penguins are the smallest species of penguin, and the only ones found in the Northern Hemisphere (in those few islands on the other side of the equator.)
