Astronomy Tuesday



I was going to just leave a big dark square here, since the NASA photo sites are down, due to the moronic government shutdown. But I do have some photos already downloaded, so I decided to post anyway.

This is Venus, photographed by the Hubbell in infrared light so the cloud patterns are visible.

That's all I remember about this particular image. Because Venus is between us and the sun, it goes through phases like the moon -- though you need a telescope to see them -- so that is probably why you're only getting half of the planet here.

To the naked eye, it's just the morning star or evening star, never far from the sun, the brightest "star" in the sky.
