Astronomy Tuesday

This is the Large Magellanic Cloud, one of two satellite galaxies to our Milky Way visible as bright patches in the sky in the southern hemisphere.

Our last night in Alice Springs we had a wonderful dinner out in the bush (choice of chicken, steak or kangaroo for your main course), with wine and beer and music, and spotted dog (a kind of quick bread with currants similar to Irish soda bread) and billy tea for dessert.

The highlight was after dinner, when all the lights were turned out and we looked at the stars. I'd seen stars this bright before, in Africa, but here the sky curved all the way to the horizon on every side: the Southern Cross, the Magellanic clouds, and a Milky Way that seemed to stretch forever.
