Sundowner

The odd, eroded banks of the Zambezi, brilliant red in the late afternoon light, so different from the flat muddy banks of the Chobe. It wasn't just the landscape that was different; it was the quiet. Sundowner cruises are a safari ritual, but we've always shared the river with dozens of other boats of tourists.

We stopped on an island in the river for drinks -- gin and tonic mixed in a silver cocktail shaker for that true colonial vibe -- and except for a few elephants and hippos and one croc, it was just us, under the immensity of the Zambian sky.
