Royal Zambezi Lodge

The beautiful rooms at the main lodge building. It's completely open; all of the rooms flow out on to the huge terrace overlooking the Zambezi River.

We're sleeping in tents here -- in very large, very nice tents, I should add, with bathrooms and private decks. This is nothing like Girl Scout camp.

We can't walk between the lodge and our tents after dark without an escort because of animals on the paths, and it's astonishing to me how we've gone from  English country cottages and an electric fence keeping the animals out in Zimbabwe, to tents and elephants on the paths. (Which is not to malign the Stanley and Livingstone -- it's a beautiful place and I enjoyed every minute of my stay there.)

Every time I think okay, this is Africa, it turns out that I haven't seen anything yet. And of course, if I've learned anything, it's that there's nothing in Africa that isn't complicated.
