Learned behavior


The only elephant that showed any displeasure was the one on the left in the picture above, big sister to the baby. Maybe she thought we were too close to the baby, because she suddenly made quite a show of trumpeting and waving her trunk at us.

And the baby immediately copied her, waving her little trunk and flapping her ears and trumpeting at us in a little squeak that was adorable rather than intimidating. In thirty or forty years, she'll be running the herd.
