Palm trees

The palmeral in Elche turned out to be less of a forest and more of a series of parks. There's one large municipal park, and most of the rest of the "forest" is in private orchards or huertos.

Fortunately the private garden on our tour, the Huerto del Cura, was enchanting. It was originally created by a priest who died in 1918, when it was bought by the same family who owns it today. There are palm trees -- many, many palm trees -- but there are also plants and animals donated from other countries: cacti, ducks, turtles, peacocks. It's like walking into a storybook.
