That's Willis Tower on the left, formerly known as Sears Tower, before hard times hit the retail industry, and also formerly the tallest building in the world.
The structure was supposedly inspired by cigarettes sticking out of a pack: different heights, and when bound together, much stronger than any of them separately. Strong enough to be, at least for a while, the tallest building in the world.
