Urban poetry

Here's an old picture: a foggy wharf in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 2019. It has been so unrelentingly humid here recently (like 90% or close to it) that any outdoor exertion, however mild, leaves me literally soaked to the skin with perspiration.

Which for some reason reminded me of the thick fogs in Nova Scotia, which were just as drenching but not nearly so unpleasant.

Urban poetry

Halifax isn't a large city -- the population is around 400,000 -- but the entire island of Newfoundland has only around 500,000 inhabitants, and after two weeks in very small towns and one small city, I definitely feel like I am in Metropolis.

I got here late in the afternoon yesterday, and took a long walk along the waterfront. It was hot and crowded and touristy, but I enjoyed these hammocks strung along one of the wharves. Unfortunately, they were all occupied.

Happy Fourth of July!

We got back late last night after what turned out to be a really fun weekend.

Here's a Providence-style tribute to the holiday: a flag dangling from a crane on the wharf, taken from the ferry coming back from Newport Sunday night.
