Fellows of All Souls
There are plaques honoring some of the Fellows of the college on the walls. This one caught my eye because A.L. Rowse was one of the few that I had ever heard of (the others were T.E. Lawrence and Isaiah Berlin.)
Then I saw the plaque for Susan Hurley beneath it. Women became eligible to join All Souls in 1979, and she was elected in 1981, so pretty shortly thereafter. I wonder what the other Fellows made of her—not only was she a woman, but according to Wikipedia, she was also—gasp!—an American! Clearly she was brilliant.
