Restaurante Alfaminha

This restaurant, down an alley in Alfama, looks as though it's been abandoned for years. But someone left bottles out (presumably) for pickup, so maybe it's really a super-secret exclusive club masquerading behind that decrepit facade.

Largo das Portas do Sol

This is one of the many miradauros, or lookout points, in Lisbon -- the city has so many hills that once you've managed to straggle up to the top of them you might as well have a comfortable place to appreciate the views.

Which I did. There's a small cafe, and I had an espresso and looked out over the red-tiled roofs of Alfama tumbling down the hill to the river.

Alfama

Alfama is Lisbon's oldest neighborhood, a labyrinth of narrow streets originally laid out by the Moors. It survived the great earthquake of 1755, and though the original buildings were mostly destroyed by various fires, the old pattern of winding alleys remains, some of them barely wide enough to walk through.
