The stalls
These are the seats where the members of the college sit during services. There are 40, representing the number of fellows when the college was founded; I'm not sure what happens if there happen to be more than that number attending a service. Do they stand? Bring in a folding chair?
“Stall”is another English liturgical term that I have often seen (there was a story called The Stalls of Barchester Cathedral in my ghost class) without a clear understanding of the meaning. The word makes me think of horses so I assumed that stalls in a church had some kind of walls or partitions surrounding them. But they're just seats.
Those are Bibles and copies of The Book of Common Prayer on the cushions.
