There are plaques honoring some of the Fellows of the college on the walls. This one caught my eye because A.L. Rowse was one of the few that I had ever heard of (the others were T.E. Lawrence and Isaiah Berlin.)
Then I saw the plaque for Susan Hurley beneath it. Women became eligible to join All Souls in 1979, and she was elected in 1981, so pretty shortly thereafter. I wonder what the other Fellows made of her—not only was she a woman, but according to Wikipedia, she was also—gasp!—an
American! Clearly she was brilliant.
